Joules Cross Report

The Joules Cross was a double header weekend of cyclocross racing this year.  Saturday was a tune-up for Sunday's 2014 Kansas State Cyclocross Championships.  What you say?  State CX Championships in October?  It is 70 degrees and I just now started doing intervals.....

A new trend in local Kansas cycling races - No stakes just mowed fields. Paul Aldeguer and Doug Stone climb along one of the many mowed paths that made up the course. 

The field that was used for the event featured plenty of climbing and one short mud section.  David Wathen leads Kevin Collins out of the "Mud Hole".

Looks like beards are coming back for cross.  Time to bring back the Chops if you ask me.

Bill Anderson has the coolest bikes and always has a smile on his face.  No matter the weather or if he is suffering Bill has a smile.  Above Bill rides around the mud (a reason you need to stake a course and not just mow it ) because he did not want to get that sweet single speed rig of his dirty.

Sadly the course featured only one short mud hole.  Scott Stevens makes short work of it and continues on one of the many climbs.

Beware of creepy crawly things out in Kansas. 

Doug Stone raced both days with a great showing on Sunday.  Doug continues to lead the Kansas Best All Around Rider in the Masters 40+ division.

It is a long walk back to the pit.  For some reason there were plenty of tire mishaps over the weekend.  Maybe it was the rough field?  Freshly mowed fields which leaves sharp pointy blades of thick grass which can puncture tires.

Two sets of barriers on the day.  One large and one small.  Both required running them. Tige Lamb used his running skills to take home 3rd place in the Masers 40+ class.  Above he passes Masters 65+ winner Steve Schweiker of Ethos Racing. 

A nice size Cat 4/5 field on Saturday - 52 riders. Plenty of passing on that first lap.  Christopher Locke demonstrates how it is done on the first lap.  A lap later the favor was returned has he faded to 38th place on the day.

 Tire failures were not that uncommon over the weekend.  David Wathen had to take a bike change but climbed back to 12th place in a stacked Masters 40+ field.

The motto "Build it and they will come" apparently works not only for baseball but for cyclocross.  Mow a course in a field and you have yourself some Kansas Cyclocross.  Above 2014 National MTB Champion Doug Long leads David Romisch and Chris Locke in the field of dreams. .

What to think of the "Twister" Shane Jones got dizzy from the "Twister" and ended up in 12th place in the Men's Cat 5 class. 

Cyclocross Racing Heats Up

The 2014 cyclocross season is well underway with two events held over the weekend in Missouri. Both the CoMo Cyclocross Cup in Columbia and the Cliff Drive Cyclocross Classic in Kansas City had heated racing both in the form of hot weather and heated battles on the courses. 

Doug Stone's form is coming along great and it showed over the weekend with two 2nd place finishes in the Master's 40+ class.  Both days Doug battled with Rick Moseley of 360 Racing.  Look for great racing between these two in the weeks to come.

Chris Locke ventured over to Columbia to represent the team and test the offerings that the CoMo Cyclocross Cup had to offer.  Great course and event with night racing on Saturday evening.  Beer and food flowed during the evening of which Locke consumed too much resulting in a 5th place finish on the day.

Damian Almanza  bombed the downhill sections at Cliff Drive in the Men's Cat 3/4 class.  Some bad luck during the race caused a DNF.

December has been a very busy month for any cyclo-cross enthusiast.  Iowa, Missouri and Kansas all crowned their 2012 state cyclo-cross champions earlier in the month.

Congrats to Christopher Locke of Cow Town for earning a silver medal in the Missouri State Championships.  Dave Wathen earned at 9th  in the Men's 40 -44 division.

Racing continued last weekend with the Lost Trail Cyclocross race.  A new event held at the Louisburg Cider Mill.  An interesting venue and fun race.  It brought back old memories of past cyclocross races with a very MTB friendly course.  Complete Lost Trail results

Congrats to Chris Locke for taking his first CX win in many, many, many years. 

Tige Lamb came out of cross retirement to earn 2nd place in the Masters 40+ class.

Cross Season Full Steam Ahead

The 2010 cyclocross season is in full swing. Attendance at local events have increased with very good participation numbers across the board. Masters classes continue to grow and the single speed class is has seen some good numbers as well. It is also good to see a few new women out there having fun.

Smithville Cyclocross results are in. A very solid turnout on a very fun course that got rave reviews. Not very many venues top Smithville and only one comes to mind at this time - University of Saint Mary. Cow Town Cycling will be hosting the De Stad Cross Cup next weekend so be sure to come out and experience this classic event on the USM course designed by Cross Guru.

De Stad Cross Cup/Kansas State Cyclocross Championships

The De Stad Cyclocross Van Kansas Series presented by Paceline Products heads back to the beautiful campus of the University of Saint Mary for the final round of our 2009 series. A classic course has been laid out for you by the Cross Guru which will include the popular elements that this great venue has to offer and an end of season feast presented by Cow Town Cycling and The Wheel Cyclery will tasty home made goodies.

Sunday’s De Stad Cross Cup will decided who are the cyclocross champions for the 2009 season and 30 Kansas State Cyclocross Championship titles will be awarded (see event flyer for details). In addition to De Stad Cross Cup event awards, De Stad series championships and Kansas State titles, the De Stad Cross Cup/Kansas State Cyclocross Championships is also the final round of the 2009 Kansas Omnium State Championship.

Note: All pre-registered riders will be entered in the series raffle to win a Scott Cyclocross frame. We are happy to announce that a diaper donation drive will be ongoing at Sunday’s event to benefit the Happy Bottoms organization. The goal of the first diaper drive is “7 Days, 7000 Diapers”. Team 360 Racing’s David Heiduk will be on site with collection bins to aid this needed service in Kansas City.

Congratulations too Mark Cole for winning the last two rounds in the Men's Cat 3 class. At Smithville he had a great race and took a convincing win. Today he followed that result up with another win going away.

Snowy Cross

This past weekend featured two events that had some "classic cross" weather. Snow and Mud :-)

Day two at the Jingle Cross Rock event was all about who could ride in the bad conditions. Some locals did really well including Cow Town Cycling's Tige Lamb. Tige used his bike handling skills to earn 3rd place in the highly competitive Master 35+ class. Complete Jingle Cross Rock results.

Locally here in Kansas City was round #2 of the Boss Cross series. Rain and snow on Saturday brought in just enough snow and precipitation to turn the course into a muddy mess. Complete results for Boss Cross 2

Veterans Cross 2008

Roger Harrison and crew put on a great event. Over 200 riders raced in the 2008 Veterans Cross event. Cow Town was there and had a very strong showing.
