Bicycle Dreams comes to Kansas City

Bicycle Dreams, the award-winning feature-length documentary about the Race Across America (RAAM), will premiere in Kansas City at the Screenland Crossroads Theatre on Saturday, February 18 at 7 p.m. The screening is sponsored as a benefit for BikeWalkKC.

The film, which has won numerous awards at film festivals all over the world, “is an up-close look at what RAAM riders go through,” says Stephen Auerbach, the director and producer of Bicycle Dreams. “They deal with searing desert heat, agonizing mountain climbs, and endless stretches of open road. And they do it all while battling extreme exhaustion and sleep deprivation. It’s a great subject for a film.”

Boss Cross #4, today at the Raytown BMX track was the last race of the series. What a way to finish it, rain leading up to and during the race made for a classic muddy cyclocross race.

Cowtown had John Williams and Rick Barret in the cat 3 race, with John getting on the podium for 3rd .

Changing leaves, morning chills, shorter days, cold rain and snow, dogs growing their winter coats. All are sure signs of fall which around here means only one thing - Gravel Grinding season is in full swing. What is gravel grinding you ask? In short they are what cycling is all about. Fun rides that allow you to explore some back country roads, trails and even some easy single track. It is about having fun on your bike, meeting new people and just riding for fun. Gravel Grinders leads you to places where fewer people dare to venture and in general slows you down and allows you to enjoy life.Two fun rides this week are planned. Wednesday the full moon will be out and we celebrate with the Full Moon Monty. Saturday is the Gardner Wind Howler.

What do need for a gravel grinder? Look for a complete article soon, but in general any touring/cyclcocross/commuter/MTB bike will do fine. In the above picture a road bike was used with 28 cc tires and worked great. We would suggest a sturdy tire. More info soon what it takes to have fun on gravel rides.

Boss Cross 3

Rick Barrett and John Williams came out to Raytown BMX for Boss Cross 3. It was a great day of racing on a on a very fun and exciting course. Rick and John worked well with one another to fight the wind and drive the cattle train to 7th and 8th place spots in the cat 3 race.

Joules Cross

Joules = The work required to produce one watt of power for one second, or one "watt second" (W·s) (compare kilowatt hour). This relationship can be used to define the watt.

Joules Cross was this past weekend. Promoted by Michelle Jensen of the Free State Women's Cycling Team. The event was held on some private land in Lawrence, Kansas. The course was a little bumpy (it is pasture land ), not technical and required plenty of Joules to be successful on the day.

John Williams used his power to secure 2nd place on the day in the Master's 30+ class.
Richard Barrett continues a strong cross season with a 4th place in the Cat 3/4 class.

Cross Out Cancer

Another successful Cross Out Cancer event was produced by the Livestrong Army team this past weekend. Events for a purpose are always nice to support and this cross race does just that raising over 3K last year. Hopefully the team was able to match that amount this year.

Cow Town Cycling had a great showing at the event lead by Rich Barrett stepping up on the podium in the very competitive Men's Cat 3 class. Damian Almanza, John Williams, Robert Tarne, Tim Greene and Chris Locke all put in solid rides. Check out some great actions shots below by Roger Harrison - Cross Out Cancer Pictures.

The KCA officials again did a great job and the fruits of their labor are up - Results 2011 Cross Out Cancer Rick Barrett attacked the course to earn a spot on the podium with 3rd in the Men's Cat 3 division.

John Williams as always gives it 100% effort. Today he even raced twice in the Master's 35+ and Men's Cat 3 earning solid finishes in both events.

Damian Almanza was up front in the Master's 35+ class, but forgot to breath and fell to 4th place on the day.
Tim Greene fresh from his high altitude training in Colorado races hard in the Masters 45+ class.

Boss Cross #1 & #2

This past weekend were the first two races of the Boss Cross series put on by Joe Fox and Jeremy Haynes. The races were held at barry platte park, which offered all the fixin's for a good cross race. The course was run one way on Saturday and the opposite on Sunday. The general assessment was that Sat. was harder, but either way it was a fun yet challenging course that had all the elements, including two desert crossings that would have Moses himself asking for mercy.

Rick Barret and John Williams represented the herd with top tens on either day. looking forward to the next installments of Boss Cross, which are to be held at the Raytown BMX track. Ashley I hope you are reading this.

Manions Cross

This past weekend was third edition of Manions Cross. This race keeps getting better and better. the course was tough, but really fun. The winding turns through weeds at the bottom of the course reminded me of harvest time in sleepy hollow, with it's own monster ta boot. The climbs were do able, the fast sections were fast, and overall I think it flowed really well. Outside of the race itself the party was fun, great vibes, food from Cowtown's own PotPie, beer from Tall Grass Brewing, and all the wide open views of beautiful Wyandotte County you could handle.

Buffalo Bill Cyclocross

Cow Town headed over to Leavenworth to contest the Buffalo Bill Cyclocross race. Damian Almanza, Chris Locke and Dave Wathen represented Cow Town in the Master’s 35+ category. Brendan Sheehan (Santa Fe Trails Bike Shop) and Roger Harrison (Lanterne Rouge) promoted the event as part of the Buffalo Bill Sports Event Weekend.

The course was on a bluff above the Missouri River and involved a lot of climbing with very little recovery. A fit racer would do well here, as it wasn’t very technical but required a lot of power to get up the hills on the out and back course. From the gun, the selection was made. The fast guys were at the front on the uphill start and the rest of us settled in to see what would happen. Damian went to the front and opened up a pretty nice 40+ second gap on the second place rider, so Chris and Dave assumed the vigilant domestique roles and held the field in check as the hilly course did not suit their current fitness levels. Damian handily won the race solo and secured Cow Town’s first victory of the 2011 cyclocross season. Congratulations to Damian on his victory and thanks to Brendan and Roger for putting on a fine event.

Dog Fish Cross

Another edition of the Dog Fish Cross, aka "Hermann Cross" was held this past weekend. Jeff Yielding orchestrated another great event in the heart of Missouri wine country. The city really gets behind this event and together with Jeff and his team make the Dog Fish Cross one of, if not the best cross race in the region. First class all the way from the fine wines that were donated for awards to the professional announcing by John Lefler.

Dave Wathen and Chris Locke ventured over to hang out with the "down-home" folks of Hermann and start their cyclocross season in style. Dave Wathen got off to a strong start on day 1 but yet another rolled tire cost him. He came back to finish 3rd overall on the weekend after riding "team backed" tires. The "hell with tubulars" could be heard through out the wine country...."Mr. Guru" was able to step up on the podium on both days and was very thankful that he was able to bring home the wifey a couple of bottles of wine. "Sunday was the best day for sure for me. The muddy course suited my lack of form and I was able to keep pace a little better. I still have a ways to go, but this a start".

Traffic Skills 101

Bike Walk KC is hosting the Traffic Skills 101 class. This bicycle skills class gives cyclists the confidence to ride safely and legally in traffic or on the trail.

Traffic Skills 101 course covers bicycle safety checks, fixing a flat, on-bike skills and crash avoidance techniques and includes a student text book. Recommended for adults and children fifteen and older, this fast-paced, nine-hour course prepares cyclists for a full understanding of vehicular cycling.

Kansas Criterium Championships

Tail Wind Cyclist & PSU Cycling hosted last weekends Kansas Criterium Championships down in Pittsburg Kansas. Roger and crew always put on first class events and Saturdays event did not disappoint. Two great days of racing, a rock climbing wall, combat shooting match and even a huffy chuck greeted all the participants. Some great racing in all the categories including the Men's Cat 3 class. Our own Richard Barrett fought back from a rear flat to secure a podium spot for the Kansas State championships. Congrats Richard on your Silver medal. I know silver prices are going up, but keep that one for the teams trophy case.

Riverfront MTB Race in Melvern, KS will be held over the October 1st and 2nd weekend.

Saturday will feature a ride for the kids since it is IMBA's International Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day

Sunday you have a choice (or you can do both for you own little off-road duathlon) 5k trail run in the morning followed by a day of cross country racing -MTB races - standard beg, sport, ss, expert classes.

2011 Kansas State MTB Championship

Lyle Reidy and crew put on another fine Crocodile Rock mountain bike race out at Perry State Park. This years event doubled as the 2011 Kansas State MTB Championships and top finishers would qualify for a trip to the 2011 USA Cycling Mountain Bike Cross Country National Championships on July 14-17 in Sun Valley, Idaho

Hot and humid weather, which is very typical for this time of year, greeted the 140 riders on race morning as they attempted to be earn a State Championship and qualify for Nationals. The approaching storm clouds did little to reduce the temps and the only savior was to find shade. Luckily the 6 mile course had plenty of shade and offered some "fast and flowy" trails to keep the heat in check.

Midwest Cycling's Ryan Feagan escaped the flooding Mighty MO and made the trip from Iowa pay off with by taking the overall win on the day completing 4 laps in 1:38. Cow Town Cycling's Damian Almanza took the crown of "Fastest Kansas Man" and became the Kansas State MTB Champion with a time of 1:42. Brendan Jenk's rounded out the overall podium with a 3rd in 1:44.

Roxanne Feagan kept it a family affair by winning the overall title on the women's side completing 4 laps in 1:50. Ethos's racing Kay Lehman continued her strong season taking 2nd overall in 2:02.

2011 Missouri State MTB Championship

The 2011 Missouri State MTB Championships were held on Sunday. The KC Cup hosted the championships for the first time and did a great job. Here are the Missouri State MTB Championship results.Congratulations to the new 2011 Missouri State Mountain Bike Champion Ashley Blum. Ashley rode am impressive KC Cup to take his age-group title and overall in the Cat 2 division.
Damian Almanza showed some great form stepping up on the podium in the very competitive Cat 1 division. Look for Damian to defend his Kansas State MTB championship at the upcoming Kansas MTB Championships.
Rich Anderson put in a good showing in the very popular Marathon class. He just missed out on a podium spot and took home 6th on the day. Nice chops Rich....
Tim Greene got in 4 laps for a solid ride and was very happy to survive 4 times through the slick Rim Job.

We had staked field in the Cat 2 division to support Ashley. Jeff Arnaud put in a great ride for 2 nd place in the 30 - 39 division. Sean Gaulter continues to improve and took home 7th place and Chris Love paid for his early pacing and rounded out the field for 9th. Now if Sean could just learn how to put a number plate on....
Brent Gowin came out of a brief retirement and spent the entire day looking over his shoulder but still managed to take home 12th in the always tough Single Speed division.
Chris Locke continues a slow comeback and rode to a 9th place in the Cat 1 40 - 49 division.

KC Car Free Challenge

It is May which means Bike Week and time for the 6th Annual Car Free Challeng e.

Cow Town Cycling Team has always supported this fun event and has had a very successful history with 4 overall titles - David Duerr, Chris Locke and Jeff Haug have won divisions in the past for our team. This year the tradition continues with a solid team including Rich Anderson, Caleb Anderson, Jeff Haug, Joshua Haug, Andrew Box, Jenny McGee and Craig Semerad. So far we are off to a great start with Rich Anderson and Joshua Haug leading the way.

Kansas Fat Tire Festival

Round #1 of the United Federation of Dirt XC West series was held this past Sunday. Great conditions and an awesome 20+ mile course greeted the 90 participants that came out west to enjoy the Kansas Fat Tire Festival at Wilson Lake State Park.

Cow Town was well represented with John Wagner taking the win in the Single Speed class - the largest class on the day btw. Jeff Arnaud made the trip out west and finished in 7th in the very competitive Men's 30- 39 class.

Thursday Night Worlds

What: Thursday Night Northland Crit at the Police Academy
When: 6:15 pm on Thursdays
Where: Kansas City Regional Police Academy, 6801 N Pleasant Valley Rd , KC, MO 64119
Why: To ride those bikes with skinny tires around in circles, what else.

A ride leaves from The Wheel Cyclery at 6:00 pm. and heads up to the training criterium. Come on out and enjoy a night full of fun.

Course features: Gated, new pavement, a variety of courses to pick from!!! This will be a great opportunity to practice criterium racing and get to know one of the courses that Tour of KC will be held on this year

Parking: From the intersection of Searcy Creek and Pleasant Valley Road, turn left and go to the last driveway heading toward the facility, basically at the bottom of the hill, turn right into the drive, follow it to the back of the facility, you can park in the lot with signs that say "RECRUIT PARKING"...DO NOT PARK OR DRIVE ON THE GRASS!!!

Some things to remember: If the gate is not unlocked by one of our sponsors...don't go in...(common sense) While you are out on the course - DO NOT LITTER and ABSOLUTELY DO NOT RIDE YOUR BIKE ON THE SKID PAD!!!

One Hot Ouachita Challange

The 10th Annual Ouachita Challenge was held under near perfect condition, albeit a bit hot for some. This years OC was so hot it even caused a brush fire....

Several members of the team ventured down to test themselves on those challenging climbs and vast technical sections. In his first race back after a long break due to surgery, Rich Anderson laid down an impressive 6:03 finishing time - due mainly to his aggressive downhill riding. Ashley Blum finally made the trip down to Oden and finished in 7:04 after suffering from some bad cramps. Jeff Arnaud also suffered from the heat and cramps but soldered on to a 8:06 finish. Tim Greene had a perfect lead-up to this years OC, but broke the cardinal rule - rest or you will parish. Hot temps did not do Tim any favors either and he did not make the final check point cut-off despite drinking 500 ounces of fluid...

out to the God’s Country Off-Road Duathlon. For 10 years this event
has been offering up “Fat Tire” fun from beginners to experts alike.
Come join in the fun on April 10, 2011 at the Lawrence River Trails
and start your multisport season off with us.

This year we are focusing on a well-organized fun event that anyone
can do and will not break the bank. For an entry fee of only $30.00
you get a multi-sport event with chip timing. Where else can you find
that? Entry fee includes one-day license, custom awards, post-race
refreshments/food and a delightful course that any ability level will
enjoy.

What: The Epic Spring Hill Gravel Grinder
When: Sunday February 13, 2011, 9:00 am
Where: Spring Hill, KS
Why: It is time to start training for Trans Iowa, Bone Bender 3/6 Hour and more. Get off that trainer and start grinding or you will be wishing you did.
Who: Anyone who has signed up for an endurance challenge in 2011 and needs to get some base miles in.

Distance will be 58 miles and features 2500 feet of climbing. Come out and enjoy some of the best gravel routes in the Midwest. A very fun route is being put together that will have all the classics that this area has to offer. The weather forecast is looking very good for a day of gravel grinding hosted by one of the nicest guys around.

The 2010 cyclocross season has been very fun and successful here locally in KC. Each event has been well attended and the competition has been strong. As the season nears an end (check http://kscycling.org for the remaining local events) and the National Cyclocross Championships take place this weekend we look back....

John Williams had a great first year in Cyclocross. "Mr. Pot Pie" turned in some great performances and reached the podium which showed his hard work ethic.
Tim Greene, another first year crosser, put in some solid performances. Tim above is ripping the beach section at Smithville.
Our "Single Speed Demon" John Wagner traded in his normal SS MTB rig for a full on cross bike. John had a great season with several podium spots and a win.
Mr. Guru's season started early and ended that way with an injury. Hopefully a recovery will allow a late season charge at the end of year events. Bring on the snow and ice...

Tige Lamb came out of retirement for one race this year before heading back....

Cyclocross in Kansas City has continued to grow in 2010, both in participation levels and permitted events. So far this season, cross events have been held every weekend locally and have had great turnouts.

This year’s exciting cyclo-cross season continues November 14^th with the De Stad Cross Cup. Cyclocross-crazed racers and spectators will descend upon the beautiful campus of the University of Saint Mary for a day full of Cyclocross fun. Another classic course has been designed by the Cross Guru and will include all the popular natural elements that this great venue offers – tree lined course, cobbles, hills, short steep run-ups, fast straights, gravel, dirt and flowing corners.

Cross Season Full Steam Ahead

The 2010 cyclocross season is in full swing. Attendance at local events have increased with very good participation numbers across the board. Masters classes continue to grow and the single speed class is has seen some good numbers as well. It is also good to see a few new women out there having fun.

Smithville Cyclocross results are in. A very solid turnout on a very fun course that got rave reviews. Not very many venues top Smithville and only one comes to mind at this time - University of Saint Mary. Cow Town Cycling will be hosting the De Stad Cross Cup next weekend so be sure to come out and experience this classic event on the USM course designed by Cross Guru.

The Smithville CX Challenge presented by The Wheel Cyclery looks forward to the first of the 2010 De Stad Van Kansas Races. The fourth annual Smithville CX Challenge will be held at the beautiful Sailboat Cove, Smithville Lake, MO just 25 minutes north of Kansas City.

Promoters Heather Jordan and Chris Locke said, “We are excited about the 2010 season. With growing attendance at each event, Kansas City is fast becoming the hotbed for cyclocross. As the numbers rise, the series attracts more sponsors to grow higher payouts and more prizes. This weekend will be no different.”

A well balanced course has been designed by the Cross Guru for the Smithville CX Challenge. The course features 158 feet of climbing per 1.8 mile lap with plenty of pavement, flowing turns, a few off camber turns, a natural steep run up (one the Guru is famous for) and Hammer Beach along the shores of Smithville Lake. As always, the money tree will be in full bloom for Sunday’s events. This is a great venue for spectating!

Kuat Bike Rack Review

Our own Bob & Michael Tarne reviewed the Kuiat racks recently. Here is what they had to say about NV.....

My son and I took the Kuat NV on a recent trip to Arkansas to do some mountain biking before I dropped him off at college. The rack performed flawlessly and looked good to boot.

I have a 2 inch hitch on my car, and the rack mated up nicely. After getting it in place, a few twists of the knob at the end of the rack gave it a nice tight fit. I’ve had other racks that bounce around; the tight fit of the Kuat was a nice change. The rack held our 2 full suspension bikes nicely. As we drove down the road, I found myself looking in the rear-view mirror just to make sure, but the bikes weren’t moving at all.

After we took our bikes off and stashed them in our hotel room, the rack folded up nicely as we headed off to dinner. I just had to remember I had an extra foot or so of length to my car as I was backing up.

The Trail Doc (repair stand attachment) also came in handy. After our first day of riding, my bike was not shifting right. In a matter of seconds, we put the attachment on and got my bike on so we could tweak my shifting.

The NV even comes with an integrated cable lock which comes in handy to secure your bikes and takes away any worries if the bikes were left on during an extended meal or anything else taking you away from your car for a while.

Having used less expensive racks such as Thule, this seems much more solid. If you’re looking for a solid rack that works well with full suspension bikes, this is a winner. And while the rack only holds 2 bikes, Kuat is releasing an extension for 2 additional bikes. The NV is advertised as working well with downhill, free ride, or other large bikes.

The local Cyclocross season started with the KC Cup Cyclocross race. Held at Swope park on a very unique and challenging course that featured about 3/4 of a mile of single track, log crossings, miniature barriers, a long road section and plenty of twisty stuff to keep things interesting (if the log crossing in the single track did not do that for you...)

I left Kansas City Friday night with hopes of getting to the start (were I would sleep in the back of the truck ) in time to get a reasonable amount of sleep. I got to Lincoln no problems, with the exception of a driving rain storm that washed all the lube off my chain. When I got to the start I was glad to see I wasn't going to be the only one sleeping out there. I would share the lot with Dennis from Iowa and another random I never met. The night was beautiful and I thought a good night of sleep wasn't going to be a problem, at least until the mosquitoes feasting upon my flesh. I ended up having to roll up all the windows which kept the bugs off me, but it turned the truck into a sauna.

Start of the race was at 6 A.M, and somehow I was late (how are you late when you sleep at the start?). I rolled out just shy of dead last. At this hour of the morning it was still pretty dark all I could see is blinky lights way up the road. As it got lighter the fog rising from the corn fields provided some of the most beautiful scenes of sunrise. At one point the road ahead completely disappeared as it dropped into a particularly foggy cloud. By the time the sun had completely risen I had made my up to what I think was the first or maybe the second chase group, about 15 riders. In the pace line the guy in front of me, who wasn't wearing a helmet, touched wheels with guy in front of him and went down. I was able to swerve and keep myself upright as well as keep my crank from hitting his head. Missing literally by two or three inches. It scared the hell out of me!! I was subsequently dropped by this group about five miles from the first check point. At the checkpoint I refilled my water bottles, bought my power ball ticket (proof you had been there). I rode out of checkpoint one with Matt Gersib, who had suffered a nasty crash himself, and another Lincolnite. They kept a brisk pace and within a few miles they had rode off from me. From check point one to two was mostly hilly B roads through some beautiful country. I managed to catch a rider who was part of the group that dropped me earlier on. We rode together for awhile he told me he had just move to Lincoln and had only heard of the race the night before. I rode off from him and spent the rest of the stage alone. Walking into the second checkpoint I managed to grab the last two frozen White Castle burgers, as well as some ice water and a power ball ticket. Standing outside the general store I gloated about having just scored the last two WC burgers, surprisingly no one seemed too care. I yucked it up with a few riders then headed out with a guy from Lincoln who's name I never caught, even though we were riding matching Salsa La Cruzes. We kept a decent pace the next ten miles to the fist oasis, which were optional stops to refill and cool off. Our stop was relatively quick and we rode off with another Lincoln rider, Janna Vavra the eventual women's SS winner. The three of us road together from a while with Janna doing most of the pulling. By the time we reached checkpoint three it was just Janna and myself, we would go on to finish the race together. As we left checkpoint three we continued to keep a decent pace by keeping our spirits up and minds distracted with light conversation. Soon we were coming across riders that were starting to break down, One guy from Lawrence looking for the short way back to Lincoln, another who was off his bike layed out on his back in the middle of the road. Then a few guys from the group that dropped me back before checkpoint one. After picking off a few more riders we caught Gersib, who had dropped me about a hundred miles earlier. Morale was high at this point, but energy was dropping. Janna dragged me to the last oasis just ten miles from the finish. There I was able to cool off and rest enough to feel able to muster up the energy to ride ten more miles to the finish. Leaving the oasis we picked up another Lincoln rider, Malcolm Tassi who I had met at the farmhouse classic. I was truly impressed by this guy, he was seven beers and a hundred plus miles into the day and was packing two cold bottles of beer in his jersey pocket (I think he was worried there wouldn't be any at the finish). We pulled into the finish with a time of 11:56. It was a good day of gravel riding with a lot of good people, now the challenge of driving three hours home without falling asleep at the wheel.

Fool's in the Mud

Round #7 Kenda NUE (National Ultra Endurance) Series rolled into Dahlonega, GA for what was planned a 100 mile romp on some sweet Georgia single track. Mother nature had other plans and the Fool's Gold 100 turned into a mud slinging classic.

Our southern division of Cow Town were on hand with Joey Locke and Selby Holler taking on the elements and had to use all the MX mud experience to survive the day. A high attrition rate was recorded, but both Joey and Selby finished strong - neither with brakes, but a hell of a smile on their faces.

As you can see by the photo on the right, the "fool's gold" took its toll on bikes and brakes. Fool's Gold is shiny, like real gold, however, unlike real gold, fool's gold (pyrites or mica) is known for its crystalline structure, which makes it usually glittery. Mountain bike racers often notice the shiny mica on their bodies after a race, but at round seven of the National Ultra Endurance (NUE) series, they experienced just how abrasive these little metal flakes can be.

Selby finished in 42nd place in 7:34 and Joey finished in 99th place in a time of 9:54. Just to finish the event was an accomplishment. I think both are now addicted to endurance racing and have plans to attend some other NUE events and the BURN 24 next year. Maybe we can get them to come up for next years Bone Bender 3/6 Hour MTB Odyssey?

Rapture in Misery Report and Pictures

Cow Town was out in force today at the annual Rapture in Misery. A great showing with several podium finishes and even a win.

A 9.2 mile loop was used for this years RIM. Plenty of climbing, some sweet single track and some rocky section for everyone's pleasure. The rain that passed on Friday made some of the course a little tricky, but for the most part the course was in great condition. Some of us like slick rock :-)

Doug Long and crew did a great job with the course and providing a venue that we look forward to coming back every year. Now if he could only do something about the heat. Maybe move RIM back to September???? I vote yes.

A hot day, but a very cool course greeted all the riders at the annual Crocodile Rock MTB race. Lyle Riedy did a fantastic job with the event and everything ran smoothly. Plenty of shade to keep you cool along with some cold beer to quench your thirst.

Cow Town was out in force today with some great results. Tim Greene stepped up on the podium for the first time in the Marathon class, John Wagner took another win in the Single Speed class, Jeff Arnaud and Craig Myers-Areth battled it out in the Sport 30-39 division, Chris Locke and Mike Classen represented the team in the Expert classes.

Tour de Emerald Coast

While the best riders in the world raced in the Tour de France this past July, the best riders in North Florida competed the the Tour de Emerald Coast - a 5 stage event held in North Florida. The TdEC uses a handicap system with the Cat 3 riders leaving 30 min ahead of the Cat 1 riders and 22.5 minutes ahead of the Cat 2 riders (a complex formula involving Vo2 Max and power to weight raios was used to set these times).

Our Cow Town crew based in Florida was on hand and kicked some serious butt. Selby Holler and Joey Locke competed in this years event with Selby taking took top honors in the Cat 1 division.

Breakthrough Tour of Kansas City

The Breakthrough Tour of Kansas City was held this past weekend. Results are in. Roger has some great photos from Saturday's Cliff Drive classic up at Roger's House of Photos.

Congrats to our Cow Town guys who braved the heat at this weekends events. Mark Cole collected a 2nd, 5th and 7th over the three days of racing. Great job Mark. John Williams is getting his feet wet on the pavement with a 15th and 17th placing. Look for John to improve rapidly. And good ole' Brent Gowin put in a good effort for 24th at the Cliff Drive event.

200 Miles of Gravel Misery

The 2010 edition of the Dirty Kanza 200 is in the books. In looking at the results, it looks like this years addition was no different than the rest - hard as hell. A unique event that one day I will do, but that day might be a long way off after reading some post reports....

Corey Godfrey(Cornbread) layed it down and won in 13:38 over Lance Andre (Saved By the Bike). Emily Brock won the women's title in 17:04. The first single speed nut case was Scott McConnell in 16:40.

Cow Town was represented by two crazy souls. Eric Nelson came out of retirement to land a top 10 placing. Eric did a awesome job finishing the DK 200 in 15:28 for 9th overall. John Williams put in many Gravel Grinders to finish in 16:41 for 25th overall. Way to go guys.

The UFD series headed west for the Kansas Fat Tire Festival. Great Bends, Kansas is the location for this fine event.

This crit practice is a show and go event on a .7 mile course. Although there is usually no traffic, the course is not closed to the public. Hope to see this event grow in size from the original 7 of us, so pass the word.

River Trail MTB Postponed

Round #1 of the new Unified Federation of Dirt series is postponed. Due to current trail condition and the forecast, race promoter Curtis Martell is postponing the River Trail Mountain Bike Challenge which was scheduled for March 28th.

New Date is April 10, 2010. Check out UFD for more info.

Now we can make it a great weekend of off-road fun. Saturday the River Trail Mountain Bike race, Sunday the God's Country Off-Road Duathlon.

The Mullet Ride

The Mullet Ride has gained popularity over the years and due to this a winter version of her was dreamed up by out ride leader Gerard Arantowicz. We added this years Mullet Ride to our little Gravel Grinder series.

Thank you to everyone who came out to ride with us today and enjoy a very fine winter day. The forecasted rain/snow stayed away and fun was had by all.

Chucky's Challenge v3

The third Annual Chucky's Challenge gravel grind will be rolling out of Jamesport at 10:00 am on Saturday-Feb. 6th.

The route will utilize the fine ground gravel via Amish buggies, some paved sections, and the rolling hills of the "Green Hills" region. I hope to put together approx. 60 miles of route with a shorter option. We had a SAG at approx. 1/2 way last year. It took the fast guys over 4 hours to complete the ride last year and there was at least one hill that 90% of the riders walked.

The start is at the 4 way stop downtown Jamesport. There is plenty of parking in the lot next to the Jamesport Tavern. We had 20+ riders last year and hope to continue to grow this till one day it may become a competive event.

Climb out of that burrow and join the Green Hills Trail Association for our 3rd annual “Gravel Grinder” from historic Jamesport, MO!

Why this ride? Chucky says “Lighten up dude, I wanna see my shadow! After being in a hole for 4 months, I’m ready to break the ice, hang out with my friends, and get the riding season started.” The ride drew 20 riders in 2009.

Starting time is 10:00 a.m. and we’ll be departing from the 4 way stop right downtown next to Gingerich’s Dutch Pantry . It’s “show-n-go” so there is no participation fee. Just show up and we will provide route maps and all the gravel riding you can handle. This will not be a race but don’t let that frighten you back into your den.

The 2010 route will traverse the hills and hollers of the Green Hills region with some “aggie flats” thrown in for recovery. Riders can choose either the “Full Chucky”-60 mi. or the shorter “Lil Chuck”. Most of the route will be on smooth crushed limestone suitable for cross or mountain bikes. The route will be posted and blazed the week of the ride so we can hopefully stay away from any fresh gravel maintenance “large gravel” and pick the best route.

Jamesport is an Amish community, so expect to see horse and buggies and prepare to take a little step back in time. There is a small grocery, some restaurants, and a “watering hole’ for post ride libations.

Cow Town's Mark Cole took another win in the Men's Cat 3 class. Conditions were tough on everyone at todays Grote Prijs event with icy conditions making the course very slick and at times hard to even stay upright. Rounding out the podium another Cow Town'er. Chris Locke continues a late season charge and worked his way back up front after a few mishaps and some tired legs from an earlier morning running event.

several trail projects are up for funding. Of course budgets are tighter
then ever, so it's especially important for your representatives to hear
from you that trails are important.

You can write a letter supporting these projects in about five minutes:

The trails being considered for this year are all in the Trails KC plan
that many of you supported and participated in creating:

*Connecting the Trolley Track and Indian Creek Trails.

*A new trail along Van Brunt on the East Side.
*The Three Trails Corridor Trail along Bannister Road.

Right now, trails in the area are fragmentary and disconnected. These are
some of the key projects that will really start to give KCMO a **trails
system** rather than just a few miles of trails here and there.

Route: A mix of gravel, levee and back country roads. Mostly road, but plenty of gravel to keep us sane. Some hills will be climbed. You will experience some discomfort depending on pace. We will try and stay off any high traffic roads. Any road bike with a good sturdy set of wheels can be used. Cross bike preferred, but not required. Distance from E. H. Young is about 38 miles.

This is a Show-N-Go ride, please bring food/water and anything you require.

Cow Town had an awesome day with Tige Lamb winning the Kansas State Cyclocross title after battling with Mark Studnicki for most of the day. Christopher Locke used his mud skills to work his way up to 2nd place on the day and more importantly win the series title.

De Stad Cross Cup/Kansas State Cyclocross Championships

The De Stad Cyclocross Van Kansas Series presented by Paceline Products heads back to the beautiful campus of the University of Saint Mary for the final round of our 2009 series. A classic course has been laid out for you by the Cross Guru which will include the popular elements that this great venue has to offer and an end of season feast presented by Cow Town Cycling and The Wheel Cyclery will tasty home made goodies.

Sunday’s De Stad Cross Cup will decided who are the cyclocross champions for the 2009 season and 30 Kansas State Cyclocross Championship titles will be awarded (see event flyer for details). In addition to De Stad Cross Cup event awards, De Stad series championships and Kansas State titles, the De Stad Cross Cup/Kansas State Cyclocross Championships is also the final round of the 2009 Kansas Omnium State Championship.

On October 22, the documentary Race Across the Sky – Leadville Trail 100 and live panel discussion featuring Lance Armstrong, Dave Wiens and other great professional and amateur cyclists are coming to over 400 movie theaters nationwide. Fall is finally here and it is time for Cyclocross. The 2009 De Stad Cyclocross Van Kansas Series presented by Paceline Products begins this Sunday with our opening round. The Diamond Blackfan Cyclocross Challenge will again start off our series with a great fundraising event for the Diamond Blackfan Anemia Foundation.

Tall Oak Challenge

The 2nd annual Tall Oak Challenge MTB Race was a great success with over 120 racers showing up to race for 6 hours. Team Red Wheel did an awesome job of preparing the trails. Hat's off to them for all their hard work.

Overall team winners of the day were the Duo of Chris Ploch and Tom Albert who laid down 11 laps in 6:18. Second went to the team of Don Travis and Cameron Chambers. They kept it close, but had to settle for second on the day. The fight for third place was came down to the last lap. A nice battel between the "Flying Cows" and "Jimmy Leg". The team of Paul Kerwit and Pfremmer were able to chase down the team of Mike Classen and Garet Steinmetz on that final lap to take third wiht 10 laps.

Jeff Winkler and Karen Holtman were the overall 6 hour Solo winners on the day. Jeff put in another impressive ride lapping most of the solo field and finishing with 11 laps in 6:32.

Cow Town 200K Bicycle Tour

Please join the Cow Town Cycling Team for a wonderful day of riding in the Northland. A very scenic 200K route is planned visiting Parkville, Waldron, Weston, Platte City, Smithville Lake, Liberty, Excelsior Springs and Riverside.

We depart at 8:00am from E.H. Young Riverfront Park, Riverside, Missouri. Ride pace will be very easy. Rest stops are planned every 15 - 30 miles. Optional shorter routes are available for those not wishing to do the entire 200k (124 miles).

This is an Show-N-Go ride and you ride at your own risk.

2009 Rapture in Misery

Another great RIM. Although mother nature shorted the event to a 6/9 hour event. The 9th Annual Rapture in Misery moved to a new location this year. Doug Long and the Green Hills Trails Association hosted this years event up at Crowder State Park. A 9.2 mile course that included the "Grave Yard" and plenty of sweet single track. And climbing, did we mention that it has plenty of that.

Some great results were turned in by the team. We took top honors in both 3 man divisions. 1st place in the Super Fast Team w/ Tige, Damian and John. 1st Place in the Fun Team with Ashley, Sean and Kevin. 3rd place in the 12 hour solo 40+ division was turned in by old man Chris Locke

July comes to a close with some great results from our team.

At the Cramp Alexander MTB race Tige Lamb lined up with some of the best experts in the region including Mark Studnicki, Cameron Chambers and Shad Shreiner. Both Mark and Tige started in the second wave of the experts and rode together until the end passing all the other experts except for the speedy Shad. Proving once again the sometimes age is better that youth. John Wagner took the Single Speed win for Cow Town with an excellent ride. Complete results are up - Results

On the road side Mark Cole won the 60 mile Sunflower State Games Road race in the Cat 3/4 division. Second place went to Kurt Albrecht with Jack Funk round out the Sunflower games podium. Here are the top placing Criterium/Road race results.

The following week the Cow Town fat tire crew was out in force at the Sunflower State games and Show-Me-State Games MTB events. Damian Almanza is showing some great form lately and took top honors on the challenging MacLennan park . Damain won the Expert 30-39 division and clocked the quickest time of the day in 1:40. Next up was Team Bad Goat who took a podium sweep of the Expert 20-29 division . Complete Sunflower MTB results here. Our Missouri riders also had their "State Games" this past week. Congrats to Sean Gaulter for placing 2nd in his first mountain bike race. John Wagner was again out giving the single speeders hell this time taking a hard earned 3rd place.

On the multi-sport side this Cow Towner showed that Cow's can indeed swim, bike and run - Fast.

July's Fat Tire Events

There are plenty of off-road events coming up....

Saturday is the Farmhouse Classic up in Lathrop, MO. Joe Fox brings up this fun gravel road ride complete with a supported aid stations, breakfast and post event food/drink. Cost is free. Well, you can not beat that. If you are interested in going email joe@cyclecitykc.com with your name and home town. He will add you to the ride roster.

Sunday is the Cramp Alexander MTB race down in Emporia, KS. Categories for all ability levels will be offered at this grass roots event. Thanks to Lelan and Garret for bringing some fat tire racing to us.

Some locals are heading down to the Fat Tire Festival in Eureka Springs this weekend. A complete weekend including short track, downhill and traditional cross country.

Gerard reminds us, and who could really forget it, that 16th Annual Flint Hills Death Ride is July
25th & 26th. No whiners allowed at this challenging event. Check out the entry form . I like rule #1 "Cows have the right of way"

Also, next weekend the "State Games" will be held. Missouri has the Show-Me-State Games MTB race and Kansas has the Sunflower State Games MTB race.

Paci's Bicycle Rally

I wanted to post this for my friend Joe and for all bicyclists out there on our roadways. On June 18th about 7:00 PM on N. Cherry leading out of NKC, a driver purposely struck Joe Pace while he was riding his bicycle. Joe was riding with Anne single file up N. Cherry, when they heard a motorist come up behind them blaring on his horn (this has happened to about all of us). Joe told Anne to just get as far over as she could, so the car could pass. The motorist came around Anne making sure he got as close as he could get to her and then purposely swerved into Joe, who was just a little farther up the road, striking him with the side of his car. Joe’s left arm and wrist took most of the impact, while the rest of his body slammed into the vehicle. Joe then crashed onto the street, hitting his hip and head on the pavement (he had a helmet on). The driver sped off, without knowing if he had seriously injured somebody or worse. Thank goodness Joe’s injuries are not life threatening and he is going to recover. There were witnesses who got a description of the car and the driver, but no license plate number. A police report was filed and a $500 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of this criminal.

Joe is having a bicycle rally at is Restaurant/Bar, Paci’s, on Saturday, June 27th at 7:00 AM. The rally will be covered by Channel 9 News. They are doing a cover story on the Heart of America Bridge and why the city should make bicycle lanes on it. Steve Mahoney interviewed Joe and Anne for the story and are hoping to use Joe’s story as a lead in to the Heart of America bike lane piece.

The address for Paci’s is 1825 Buchanan, NKC, MO. If you can make it on June 27th at 7:00 AM, that would be great. Hopefully we can help raise awareness that bicycles are out on the roads and we have just as much right to use the roads as cars do and maybe we can get the guy who hit Joe off the street, before he attacks another cyclist.

Rhett's Run MTB Race Report

MWFTS Race # 5 was held Sunday, June 7th in Columbia, Missouri. Cow town was respectfully represented by John Wagner, Garet Steinmetz and Sean Burns. Race day conditions were less than optimal with rain showers through the night/morning. The rain stopped and the trail drained fairly well, leaving some great singletrack riding with minimal slick rocks on what would prove to be a great and challenging course.

First off the line was the Expert Men. Garet’s start looked great and into the singletrack he disappeared. John and I then lined-up for the Single Speed event, and we were both in the top 5 heading into the woods.

The first 200 yards of singletrack was a downhill, rock covered slippery mess. I heard the rider behind me crash hard, taking out a few of the heard behind him. This allowed the top five positions to make a pretty good gap. Slowly the riders also made a pretty good gap in front of me, and I was alone having a great time, and finally passed by a couple strong riders just before the start of lap two. John was long gone by now, battling it out for a podium finish. I slowly fell into a state of ‘umm, I just bonked hard’ and was at the point were I had to literally stop and take a break, I was feeling pretty sick. A handul of riders passed me until I finally had the juice to get back in the saddle and finish the race.

The course was great and as usual, it was a good time had by everyone.

Holler and Steinmetz On Top

Cow Town's Selby Holler continued his winning ways by taking the overall win at the BUMP N' Grind in the Cat 3 division. Held annually at the Oak Mountain State Park the event is hosted on a 10,000 acre facility and includes the famous 600 foot climb up Red This years event hit the big time as it was the 2nd round of the Kenda Cup East.

Closer to home, the first round of the Down and Dirty MTB Series was held in Warsaw, Missouri at the Tru m an Lake MTB Park. A challenging 7 mile course awaited everyone Sunday morning. In the Expert field, Cow Town Cycling's Garet Steinmetz took his first solo win of the year over Ebby Norman of Pro-Velo. Steinmetz suffered two flats, but still managed to get the better of the elder Norman.
